Which tournament format suits you?

Round robin: everyone plays everyone. It is fair, because one bad match does not knock you out. The number of matches grows fast, though: players × (players minus 1) ÷ 2. With 8 players that is 28 matches. Good for 4 to 10 players or teams.

Knockout: lose and you are out. There is always one match fewer than players, so 15 for 16 teams. It is quick and gets more exciting towards the final. But half the field only plays once. If you are short of the next power of two (4, 8, 16, 32), the first names on the list get a bye.

DYP (Draw Your Partner): the doubles teams are drawn at random. Colleagues who rarely work together end up side by side at the table. Strong and new players get mixed, which makes the matches more open.

Groups and knockout: from about 12 teams, a round robin takes too long. Split into two groups, play a round robin in each, then a knockout with the best of each group. In the generator, create one plan per group and then a knockout plan.

How long does each format take?

The length depends on three numbers: matches per round, number of tables and minutes per match. A wave is everything that runs at the same time on your tables. The formula: rounds × waves per round × minutes.

The table assumes 2 tables and 10 minutes per match, changeovers included. That is an assumption. Time your first match and enter your own figure above, and the generator recalculates.

PlayersFormatMatchesRoundsCalculationDuration
6Round robin1555 rounds × 2 waves × 10 min100 min (about 1.7 h)
6Knockout531 + 1 + 1 waves × 10 min30 min
8Round robin2877 rounds × 2 waves × 10 min140 min (about 2.3 h)
8Knockout732 + 1 + 1 waves × 10 min40 min
12Round robin661111 rounds × 3 waves × 10 min330 min (about 5.5 h)
12Knockout1142 + 2 + 1 + 1 waves × 10 min60 min (about 1 h)
16Round robin1201515 rounds × 4 waves × 10 min600 min (about 10 h)
16Knockout1544 + 2 + 1 + 1 waves × 10 min80 min (about 1.3 h)

An example: 8 players in a round robin play 7 rounds of 4 matches. On 2 tables that is 2 waves per round, so 7 × 2 × 10 = 140 minutes. In a knockout there are 4 + 2 + 1 matches, on 2 tables 2 + 1 + 1 = 4 waves, so 40 minutes.

Round robin templates for 4 to 8 players

The plans use numbers instead of names. Give each person a number and play round by round. With an odd number, one person sits out each round.

Frequently asked questions

How many rounds does a round robin tournament have?

With an even number of players n there are n minus 1 rounds, with an odd number n rounds. In each round everyone plays once. With an odd number, one player sits out each round, and over the whole tournament everyone sits out exactly once.

How many matches does a foosball tournament with 8 players have?

In a round robin there are 28 matches (8 × 7 ÷ 2) in 7 rounds. In a knockout there are 7 matches, because every match knocks out exactly one player.

What is a bye?

A bye means you have no opponent in that round. In a knockout you go through without playing. This happens when the number of players is not a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32). The generator gives the byes to the first names on the list. In a round robin with an odd number of players, everyone sits out once instead.

What does DYP mean?

DYP stands for Draw Your Partner. The doubles teams are drawn at random. People who rarely meet end up playing together, and strong and new players get mixed.

Are our names stored?

No. The plan only lives in your browser and in the part of the link after the # sign. Your browser does not send that part to our server. Anyone with the link can see the names and scores, though.

Does everyone see the latest scores if I share the link?

The link shows the state at the moment you copy it. It does not update itself. Best: one person runs the plan and sends the link again after each round.
